Korean at a Hotel: Leave Your Bags Before Check-in and Ask Where to Collect Them
You arrive at your hotel before your room is ready, with a suitcase you would rather not carry around. Ask about storing the bag separately from checking in: 짐을 맡겨도 돼요? means “May I leave my luggage with you?” If the answer is yes, your next question is where to collect it. These are two different arrangements, so finish one before assuming the other.

Start with the bag, not the room
At reception, point to your luggage while making the request. 짐 is a useful general word for luggage: you do not need to count suitcases or decide whether “bag” means a backpack or a large case. The polite ending 돼요? asks whether something is allowed. It leaves room for staff to explain their conditions. You are asking them to look after the bag, not simply announcing that you will leave it in the lobby.
Six phrases to use and recognize
Pronunciation is an approximate reading guide, not audio. Read eo and eu as single Korean vowels, not two English syllables; kk marks a tense consonant. Hangul remains the reference.
01
짐을 맡겨도 돼요?
ji-meul mat-kkyeo-do dwae-yo?

02
체크인 전에 짐을 맡겨도 돼요?
che-keu-in jeo-ne ji-meul mat-kkyeo-do dwae-yo?
May I leave my luggage before check-in?
03
네, 맡기셔도 돼요.

Yes, you may leave it with us.
04
죄송하지만 안 돼요.
joe-song-ha-ji-man an dwae-yo.
I’m sorry, but that isn’t possible.
05
짐은 어디서 찾으면 돼요?
ji-meun eo-di-seo cha-jeu-myeon dwae-yo?
Where should I collect my luggage?
06
다른 곳에 맡길 수 있어요?
da-reun go-se mat-kkil ssu i-sseo-yo?
Can I leave it somewhere else?
Make the timing explicit
Add 체크인 전에, “before check-in,” when the timing matters. You can say it as the beginning of the longer phrase below. This does not ask for early access to your room. If staff start discussing room availability, return to the luggage request rather than assuming that a refusal of early check-in also answers the storage question. Conversely, a yes to storage does not mean that you can enter the room.
Listen for the permission, then confirm collection
맡기다 is the action of leaving something in another person’s care. 찾다 has several uses; in this situation, 짐을 찾다 means collecting your stored luggage. Connect the two actions: leave the bag now, collect the bag later. Ask where you should collect it even if the handover happens at reception. The collection point could be different, and the sentence itself does not establish an opening time, price, or guarantee of same-day storage.
A short practice scene
A fictional exchange at reception:
Bode: 체크인 전에 짐을 맡겨도 돼요? — May I leave my luggage before check-in?
ShuShu: 네, 맡기셔도 돼요. — Yes, you may leave it with us.
Bode: 짐은 어디서 찾으면 돼요? — Where should I collect my luggage?
Now change the answer:
ShuShu: 죄송하지만 안 돼요. — I’m sorry, but that isn’t possible.
Bode: 다른 곳에 맡길 수 있어요? — Can I leave it somewhere else?
The second branch asks about an alternative. It does not mean staff have agreed to arrange one.
Build a useful pause
Practise the request in two chunks: 체크인 전에 / 짐을 맡겨도 돼요? Pause briefly after the time phrase, keeping the question together. Then practise the shorter version without it. Both are useful; the longer one supplies a missing condition rather than sounding automatically more polite. Before leaving a real bag, make sure you understand the hotel’s answer and any storage conditions. This lesson teaches the conversation, not a hotel policy.
Try three situations
Staff say your room is not ready. Does that establish whether they can store your bag?
Answer: No. Ask phrase 2: the room and luggage are separate requests.
Storage is allowed, but you do not know where to return. Which phrase fits?
Answer: Phrase 5. 어디서 asks for the collection location, not permission to check in.
You hear phrase 4. Do you leave the suitcase and say thank you?
Answer: No. Keep your bag. Phrase 6 asks about an alternative without treating the refusal as permission.
